EXPLORING THE SCRIPTURES
Topic: What is going on in 2 Corinthians? Paul seems to be in a lather of indignation and defensiveness and these themes keep repeating in this letter in a confusing way. It is thought that 2 Corinthians consists of fragments of different letters combined, which were written at a very difficult time in Paul’s ministry when he felt that he had failed the Church in Corinth. “Super-Apostles” had come in his absence and poisoned the community there against him. While he struggles to bring this congregation back to a true understanding of Jesus’s life and teachings, he gives us, reading his letter so many centuries later, a wonderful gift of his theology and understanding of the gospel.
Readings: New Covenant – 3:1-6, 15-18; Revelation of Truth – 4:1-6; Reconciliation – 5:14-21; Strength in Weakness – 12:1-10
